Ground answers in your documents

By default the Copilot answers from the model's general knowledge. Attach your own documents and it answers from them instead, with numbered citations you can check word for word.

Attach documents

  1. In a conversation, open the attach picker from the composer.
  2. Choose a source tab:
  • Library: any document from your Document Library.
  • KYB Manager: evidence documents from an entity's KYB record.
  • Upload: a new file; it is added to your Library first, then attached.
  1. Select the document. It appears as a chip above the composer, showing its indexing state.

A conversation can hold up to 10 attached documents. Remove a chip to detach it.

The Grounded badge

When an answer draws on your attachments, it carries a Grounded badge. That tells you the reply was built from retrieved passages of your documents rather than model memory alone.

Read the citations

Grounded answers include numbered markers like [1] in the text.

  1. Click a marker to open its popover.
  2. The popover shows the verbatim passage the Copilot relied on, with the source document and page.
  3. Follow the deep link to open the document itself: library documents open in their drawer, KYB Manager documents open in the entity's KYB record.

Always verify a claim against its cited passage before acting on it.

Fresh uploads and indexing

Documents are indexed for retrieval after upload. If you attach a file that has not finished indexing, the conversation shows a still indexing notice: you can keep chatting, but that document will not ground answers until indexing completes, usually within a short while.

The picker states each document's condition:

  • Ready: indexed and usable for grounding.
  • Indexing: in progress.
  • Not yet indexed: nothing has been indexed yet, or the last attempt predates the current indexer. Attaching it queues a fresh pass.
  • Unreadable: the current indexer tried and found no usable text. Hover the label for the reason.

Scanned pages and images are read with text recognition (up to the first 12 pages), so a scan that once read as unreadable is usually searchable now.

What cannot be attached

Identity documents anchored to a person (for example a director's passport in the ownership register) can never be attached or indexed. This is by design: personal identity evidence stays out of the AI corpus entirely. The picker simply does not offer these files.

Tips

  • Grounding scales beyond single threads: put shared files on a project so every conversation in it is grounded by them.
  • For regulator material, use regulator packs instead of uploading legislation yourself.
  • To search passages without a conversation, use clause search; it costs no credits.
